ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a widely used, strong general-purpose plastic, typically a light yellow or milky white granular resin. PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable resources. For users, several key differences are apparent, and for many applications, PLA offers distinct advantages. Firstly, PLA emits no noticeable odor during printing, making it suitable for enclosed spaces, whereas ABS produces a strong, pungent smell. Secondly, PLA-finished parts have a higher, glossier surface brightness compared to the inherently matte finish of ABS. Thirdly, PLA processes at a lower temperature, offering energy savings. From an environmental perspective, both can be considered, but PLA's biodegradability gives it an edge. Finally, PLA is generally easier to print with, having less warping tendency. The main drawback of PLA is that its strength and heat resistance are not as high as those of ABS.
