latest company news about Nylon (PA) Performance: Advantages and Disadvantages

Nylon (polyamide, PA) is a crystalline engineering plastic with the following characteristics:

Advantages:

  • High mechanical strength, good toughness, excellent resistance to compression and positional loads.
  • Outstanding fatigue resistance – retains mechanical strength even after repeated flexing.
  • Smooth surface, low coefficient of friction, and good wear resistance.
  • Resistant to alkalis, most salt solutions, weak acids, engine oil, gasoline, and many solvents.
  • Non-toxic, inert to biological attack, with good antibacterial and antifungal properties.
  • Good heat resistance with a wide operating temperature range (typically -40°C to 100°C for long-term use; short-term up to 120–150°C for some grades).
  • Excellent electrical insulation properties.
  • Lightweight, easily dyed, and easy to mold.

Disadvantages:

  • High moisture absorption, leading to dimensional changes and reduced properties when wet (though can be mitigated with reinforcement or stabilizers).
  • Poor resistance to UV/light exposure (requires UV stabilizers for outdoor use).
  • Not resistant to strong acids or strong oxidizing agents.
  • Requires more careful part design (e.g., draft angles, wall thickness uniformity) to manage shrinkage and warpage.
