Modified polyphenylene oxide (PPO) is renowned for its exceptional balance of thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties, making it a high-performance material for demanding applications. The Noryl® series is a prime example, with fundamental grades typically based on PPO/PA (nylon) alloys and PPO/PS (polystyrene) alloys. A key advantage of these alloys is their low and predictable molding shrinkage, significantly smaller than crystalline plastics such as PA, resulting in minimal dimensional change during processing and making them excellent for high-precision components requiring tight tolerances.
Thermally, modified PPO offers heat deflection temperatures (HDT) typically ranging from 90°C to 170°C under high load; reinforced grades such as the Noryl CRN series push HDT to approximately 200°C under high load while maintaining a V-0 flame retardancy rating. Electrically, modified PPO exhibits very low dielectric constant and dielectric loss that are largely unaffected by temperature, humidity, or frequency, complemented by high volume resistivity and impressive breakdown voltage resistance, making it an ideal insulator for electrical and electronic components. The Noryl GTX series achieves HDT of 185–195°C under low load, withstanding standard automotive paint spray booth temperatures without deformation—a critical advantage when co-processing with steel. Modified PPO is used across automotive, electrical engineering, consumer appliances, and fluid handling.
