latest company news about Essential Drying Treatment for PC Plastic Granules
Polycarbonate (PC) plastic is widely recognized for its exceptional transparency, impact resistance, and thermal stability, making it a preferred material across numerous industries. However, PC exhibits a relatively high water absorption rate due to its chemical structure, which can lead to hydrolytic degradation during processing if moisture is not adequately removed. Therefore, a mandatory pre-processing step is thorough preheating and drying before any forming operation. For pure, unmodified PC resin, the recommended drying temperature is 120°C to effectively drive off absorbed moisture without causing thermal degradation. Modified PC grades, which may contain impact modifiers, flame retardants, or other additives, typically require a slightly lower drying temperature of 110°C to preserve additive integrity and prevent premature cross-linking or decomposition. Regardless of the specific grade, the minimum drying duration should be at least 4 hours to ensure complete moisture removal throughout the material bulk. However, drying time must not exceed 10 hours, as prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures can lead to thermal oxidation, yellowing, and degradation of mechanical properties. A practical and reliable method to verify adequate drying is the air extrusion technique: by extruding a small amount of material without screw rotation and visually inspecting the extrudate, a bubble-free, smooth, and moisture-free strand indicates proper dryness, whereas splay marks or bubbles suggest residual moisture requiring additional drying.

Regarding material sustainability and cost optimization, the incorporation of recycled PC materials is feasible and increasingly practiced. A common and safe usage ratio is up to 20% recycled content blended with virgin resin for applications maintaining quality standards. In certain non-critical applications where extreme mechanical or optical performance is not required, 100% recycled PC can be utilized effectively. The actual permissible recycled content depends entirely on the specific product's quality requirements, including mechanical strength, appearance, and regulatory compliance. A critical processing consideration is that recycled materials from different sources or containing different masterbatches should never be mixed indiscriminately without thorough compatibility testing. Such mixing can severely compromise the finished product's properties, leading to reduced impact resistance, poor surface quality, delamination, or premature failure.
